Florianópolis

Most of the municipality of Florianópolis is located on an island, with 42 beaches, two lagoons and a great geographical diversity such as the formation of dunes, mangroves, mountains and an enormous green area. The continental part comprises less than 3% of the municipality. With about 470 thousand inhabitants (data from 2015), most of the population is concentrated in the Center, in the continental portion and in the North of the island. Due to its low population density (17th position among the capitals), and with an exuberant nature, the city offers its inhabitants an excellent quality of life.

Floripa, as it is affectionately called, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brazil, especially in the summer, when its population doubles. In September, the average temperature in the city is 18 degrees centigrade. Therefore, during the event the climate will be quite pleasant.

Some city indexes are listed below:

  • It has a high quality of life, being the Brazilian capital with the highest score in the Human Development Index (HDI), according to the UN;
  • In 2009, The New York Times newspaper named the city "the destination of the year";
  • In 2006, "Newsweek" magazine ranked Florianópolis as one of the "Ten Most Dynamic Cities in the World";
  • "Veja" magazine classified it as "The best place to live in Brazil";

In terms of vocation for technological development, Florianópolis also stands out. In 2015, the entrepreneurship support organization Endeavor elected the city as the second most entrepreneurial city in Brazil. There are more than 600 startups that earn more than R$ 1 billion annually and grow at a rate of 15% per year. The trajectory for this success started in 1984, with the creation of the Foundation Reference Centers for Innovative Technologies (CERTI), which two years later created the Business Center for Advanced Technologies (CELTA) incubator. According to data from the foundation, CELTA supported the creation of 98 new companies, with revenues of R$ 7 billion. CERTI also influenced the creation of the "ParqTec Alfa" technology park, in which its facilities are today. In August 2017, Embraer opened its second Engineering and Technology Center in Brazil at ParqTec Alfa.

In the same direction, the Association of Technology Companies of Santa Catarina (Acate), created in 1986, supports the development of the state's technology sector. The association has been creating verticals of technology companies that operate in similar and complementary markets. In particular, the vertical associated with Telecommunications, recently renamed to Vertical Connectivity, supports the creation of startups in the sector. Finally, we must mention the "Sapiens Parque" innovation park, located in the north of the island, 9 km from the event venue.
