Speakers: Alex Vidigal Bastos e Diógenes Cecílio da Silva Júnior.
Abstract: This tutorial aims to present the possibility of using D2D communication technology in cellular networks, which includes the state of the art, as well as an overview of works that illustrate the research trends and the main challenges of the area. The proposed work has a theoretical and practical profile, through the explanation of D2D communication and SimuLTE presentation (OMNet ++).

Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

Speakers: Ruan Delgado Gomes e Iguatemi E. Fonseca.
Abstract: The use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for the implementation of monitoring and control systems in industrial environments presents a number of advantages when compared to the use of wired networks, such as low cost and high flexibility. However, several challenges must be faced for these networks to be used in applications that have critical reliability and deterministic requirements. Interference, shadowing, and multipath attenuation problems can significantly affect the quality of the wireless channel in industrial environments. In addition, it is necessary to deal with the variations that occur in the quality of the wireless channel over the time. To address these issues, new standards and protocols have been proposed to provide greater reliability and determinism compared to the older protocols commonly used to implement WSNs. This document presents a mini-course proposal to be taught at the XXXV Brazilian Symposium on Telecommunications and Signal Processing, with the theme "Wireless Industrial Sensor Networks". In this tutorial, the challenges for the deployment of industrial WSNs will be discussed, based on results obtained in experimental and simulation studies. The new standards developed for this type of network will also be presented. Finally, we will present recent results of studies on link quality estimation and dynamic channel allocation in industrial WSNs.

Satellite Communications

Speakers: Leonardo Aguayo e A. Judson Braga.
Abstract: In this tutorial we present, in brief, some aspects that should be considered in the elaboration of a satellite system, including a partial state of the art on the subject. It is described here from the aspects of propagation and antennas to the parameters of the main patterns of satellite communication, including network elements such as traffic and control channels, seeking the contextualization of the market and of what is available in national territory.

Wireless body networks: a new network paradigm

Speakers: Vinicius Ferreira e Debora Muchaluat-Saade.
Abstract: The new advances in electronics have enabled the development of miniaturized and intelligent biomedical sensors that can be used to monitor the operation of the human body. The use of wireless communication has proved to be a more adequate alternative, which provides less inconvenience to patients and is more cost-effective. In order to fully exploit the benefits of wireless technologies in telemedicine, a new type of wireless network has emerged: Wireless Body Networks or Wireless Body Area Networks - (WBANs). However, technical and social challenges must be addressed to enable its practical adoption. Some of these challenges are already known in other scenarios, such as the operational requirements for a wireless network, energy efficiency, the few computational resources and the heterogeneous composition of the network. However, factors such as the use of the human body as a means of propagation, the effects of radiation on human tissue, and variations in body movement make wireless body networks a new paradigm for wireless communication networks. The main objective of this tutorial is to discuss about the main concepts, challenges and perspectives for wireless corporative networks, an area of great opportunity for research and development.

Information Geometry

Speakers: Charles Cavalcante e Sueli Costa.
Abstract: Although its origins can be traced to the 1940s, in recent years, after the consolidation of its foundations by S. Amari, the area of information geometry has attracted the attention of several researchers for the potential of applying their tools. This is guided by the understanding of geometric models of different probability distributions, metrics and divergence measures which naturally connect with various problems in communications and signal processing. Several applications have benefited from geometric methods that explore the "curved" aspects of the space of interest. These include coding, constrained optimization, radar detection, clustering, adaptive filtering, brain-machine interface, image processing, voice processing, econometrics, spatio-temporal processing and several others. Our purpose in this tutorial is to present the fundamental concepts of information geometry and to discuss several applications that present performance gains when methods of non-Euclidean geometry associated with the space of probability distributions are employed.

Routing in IoT - Protocols, Mobility and Security

Speakers: Estefânia Arata, Jeferson Cotrim e João Kleinschmidt.
Abstract: This work presents the proposal of a tutorial for the 2017 SBrT and has as its main theme the routing in the filed of Internet of Things (IoT). The main routing characteristics for IoT will be described, addressing new proposals and the RPL protocol, standardized by the IETF for lossy low power networks. Two important issues for new protocols and how to make routing secure and how to handle node mobility on the network. These issues will be discussed and the main existing solutions will be addressed as well as the research challenges. Finally, practical examples of RPL simulation are presented in the Contiki operating system.

Visible Light Communications: Systems, Devices and Designs.

Speakers: Flávio R. Ávila (UERJ), Michel P. Tcheou (UERJ), Germano M. Penello (UFRJ), Fernando M. Fernandes (UERJ) e Lisandro Lovisolo (UERJ).
Abstract: In this tutorial we discuss the use of Visible Light Communications and how such systems are expected to improve and augment capacity in the last mile. We present a review on the different systems and techniques that have been proposed and tested using visible light as basic resource for transmission. System structures, modulation techniques, application scenarios, and characteristics of emitters and detectors that push VLC technology are discussed. The particularities of the LED and the photodiode that are relevant to communications are presented, and recent techniques proposed to address devices imperfections are surveyed.
